About Saltö Nature Reserve

Saltö Nature Reserve is situated in the Blekinge Archipelago along the southeastern coast of Sweden. Established to preserve the unique natural environment, the reserve encompasses a mixture of rocky islands, skerries, and shallow waters shaped by the Baltic Sea. The landscape features rugged cliffs, dense pine and deciduous forests, open meadows, and seashores dotted with rich flora including sea thrift, heather, and coastal orchids. This area is an important habitat for diverse bird species such as ospreys, eiders, and various waterfowl, making it a significant stopover for migratory birds. Saltö carries a rich cultural history as well, with remnants of traditional fishing villages and maritime heritage visible throughout the reserve. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Saltö for its scenic hiking trails that wind along the coastline, offering expansive views of the archipelago, as well as opportunities for kayaking in the calm Baltic waters. Visitors also enjoy wildlife observation, especially during spring and autumn migrations. The reserve’s tranquil and unspoiled environment provides an ideal setting for nature photography and quiet contemplation in nature. Visitor facilities are minimal to preserve the natural character, so preparedness and respect for the natural environment are essential. Saltö Nature Reserve stands as a testament to Sweden's commitment to coastal conservation, blending ecological significance with cultural history and outdoor recreation.
